Rep. Robert B. Aderholt (R-4th-AL) Began service in 1997. Committee Assignments: Appropriations Position on SAF Issues: Fiscally conservative Republican, who generally supports SAF on issues, although promoting conservative social-issue policies has been his major interest. Voted with SAF on Ergonomics, Estate Tax and the AHP Bill. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, (R-6th-MD) Began service in 1993. Committee Assignments: Armed Services; Science and Technology; Small Business Position on SAF Issues: Pro-business. Joe Barton, (R-6th-TX) Began service in 1985. Committee Assignments: Energy and Commerce (Ranking Minority Member) Position on SAF Issues: Voted against high risk occupational disease notification bill and mandated family and medical leave legislation. Voted with SAF on Ergonomics, Estate Tax and the AHP Bill. Previous SAF Contributions: $300-1988, $300-1989, $250-1994 Miscellaneous Information: Barton is being targeted by agriculture lobbyists as a key Member outside the Agriculture Committee for future support. The 6th District used to be dominated by conservative Democrats, but Republicans are gaining. Sen. Robert Bennett, (R-UT) Rep. Marion Berry, (D-1st-AR) Began service in 1997. Committee Assignments: Appropriations; Budget Position on SAF Issues: During his campaign, Berry pledged to make agriculture a priority of his tenure in Congress. He is particularly interested in opening international markets to American agricultural products. In general, he will be favorably disposed to our agricultural issues. In addition, Berry has indicated a strong interest in expanding existing efforts to review regulations that burden business, and to work for regulatory relief for businesses. Voted with SAF on Estate Tax but against SAF on Ergonomics. Previous SAF Contributions: $500-1997, $500-1999, $500 - 1999 Miscellaneous Information: Prior to deciding to run for Congress, Berry was the White House Liaison in the Clinton Administration for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In that position, he had met with SAF and demonstrated a strong interest in and support of our industry. SAF member John Muller has established a good relationship with Berry and has recommended that SAFPAC should support him. Representative Berry is a member of the New Democrat Coalition. Rep. Judy Biggert (R-13th-IL) Began service in 1999. Committee Assignments: Education and Labor; Financial Services; Science and Technology; Standards of Official Conduct Position on SAF Issues: Supportive of small business issues. Supports tax reduction and reform. Favors compensatory time legislation. Voted with SAF on Ergonomics, Estate Tax and the AHP Bill. Previous SAF Contributions: $500-1998, $500-1998, $500-1999, $1,000 - 2001 Miscellaneous Information: A small business owner for 25 years, Biggert ran a home-based law practice specializing in estate planning. She knows first-hand the challenges businesses must overcome to compete successfully. Biggert has placed high priorities on overhauling the IRS and tax reduction. Rep. Sanford D. Bishop Jr., (D-2nd-GA) Began service in 1993. Committee Assignments: Appropriations Position on SAF Issues: Rep. Bishop is a staunch supporter of agriculture, which is a major economic force in his south Georgia district. Specialty crops are very important here, and nursery and floriculture are likely to become more important as farmers transition out of peanuts and tobacco. He has supported our position on such major issues as immigration -- and, in fact, was one of the few House Democrats to do so. Voted with SAF on Estate Tax and the AHP Bill, but against SAF on Ergonomics. Previous SAF Contributions: $500-1996, $1500-2002 Miscellaneous Information: Rep. Bishop, as a Southern Democrat, does not always follow the "party line." He voted in favor of regulatory reform to ease the burden on small business, and voted with agriculture on the immigration "guestworker" provision. Although he does not support SAF on every issue, his support is important on agricultural issues and we need to cultivate a stronger relationship with him. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-7th-TN) Began service in 2003. Committee Assignments: Energy and Commerce, Select Energy Independence and Global Warming Position on SAF Issues: As a newly elected Member of Congress, Rep. Blackburn is an outspoken conservative on most issues, and in particular, tax issues. Prior to being elected in 2002, she owned a retail marketing company. Voted with SAF on the AHP Bill. Leonard Boswell (D-3rd-IA) Began service in 1997. Committee Assignments: Agriculture; Transportation & Infrastructure; Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Position on SAF Issues: Supports balancing the budget, while protecting Medicare and Social Security, and has sided with conservative Democrats on a number of other issues. Allen Boyd, Jr. (D-2nd-FL) Began service in 1997. Committee Assignments: Appropriations (Agriculture Subcommittee); Budget Position on SAF Issues: As a conservative Democrat with experience in our industry, Boyd can be counted upon to support SAF on most issues. Boyd campaigned on his record as a State Representative in helping to reduce government waste, taxation and regulation. Until recently, Boyd was a partner in a North Florida nursery operation. He continues to be involved in a sod farm operation. Voted with SAF on Ergonomics and Estate Tax. He has established a good reputation with both the business and agriculture communities in the District and his interest in agriculture, budget and property rights issues has won him the support of the Washington, DC agricultural community. Committee Assignments: Ways and Means Position on SAF Issues: As Chief Deputy Minority Whip, Cantor holds a powerful position in House Republican leadership. He is interested in and supportive of small business issues, and can be counted on to vote with SAF on those issues. Voted with SAF on the AHP Bill. Previous SAF Contributions: $750 - 2003, $2,000-2004, $3,000-2005, $2,200-2007, $1,000-2008 Miscellaneous Information: Before his election to Congress, Eric served in the Virginia House of Delegates for nine years and achieved a record of accomplishment as a state legislator that was recognized by groups such as Virginia Free, the leading pro-business organization in Virginia, as well as the Virginia Family Foundation and the Virginia Health Care Association. As Chief Deputy Minority Whip, Eric has a seat at the Republican leadership table in the House where he will help set the policy agenda in Congress. The post of chief deputy whip was previously held by Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), now the Minority Whip, and by the former Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). On January 10, 2003 , Eric won a seat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has direct jurisdiction over taxes, trade, Social Security, Medicare, prescription drugs for seniors, health care and welfare reform. Rep. Lois Capps (D-23rd-CA) Began service in 1998. Committee Assignments: Energy and Commerce; Natural Resources Position on SAF Issues: Representative Capps was elected on March 10, 1998, to fill the seat formerly held by her husband, Walter Capps, after he died in office. Although liberal on some issues, she can be expected to be very supportive of floriculture, which is a major industry in her district (the Santa Barbara-Carpinteria area). In general, she is expected to pursue a moderate course with regard to business issues in this conservative district. Voted with SAF on Estate Tax, but not on Ergonomics. Committee Assignments: Education and Labor; Financial Services Position on SAF Issues: Strong supporter of SAF on changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Sen. Susan Collins, (R-ME) Began service in 1997. Rep. Jim Costa (D-20th-CA) Began service in 2005. Committee Assignments: Agriculture; Foreign Affairs; Natural Resources Position on SAF Issues: Costa has served 24 years in the California State Legislature. As a third-generation family farmer, he will understand agriculture issues and can be expected to support issues important to SAF.Costa is very heavily favored to win this election, and it is important for SAF to establish a relationship with him at this point. Dooley has been a strong friend of the floral industry, and Costa can be expected to continue that tradition. He is endorsed by, among others, Senator Dianne Feinstein and Representative Sam Farr, both of whom are cognizant and supportive of the green industry. Sen. Mike Crapo, (R-ID) Rep. Committee Assignment: Appropriations- Agriculture Subcommittee (Chairman); Budget Position on SAF Issues: DeLauro voted against H.R. 4437 (House Enforcement-Only Immigration Bill) (a vote for SAF). As a member of the important Education & Labor Committee, Ehlers is an important voice for small business and will support SAF's position on issues. Floriculture has a strong presence in Michigan, and we need to cultivate our relationship with him. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, (R-8th-MO) Began service in 1996. Committee Assignments: Appropriations (Agriculture Subcommitteea) Position on SAF Issues: Ran as a "common-sense, conservative voice" for the seat vacated by the death of her husband, Congressman Bill Emerson, in 1996. Bill Emerson was an extraordinarily popular Congressman, and his wife is also well-known and well-liked. She is on record as supporting a balanced budget, agriculture profitability, and economic growth. She has a strong track record with the Republican Party. She can be counted on to be supportive of SAF positions on most, if not all, issues and attends SAF's annual reception. Voted with SAF on Ergonomics, Estate Tax and the AHP Bill. Rep. Anna Eshoo, (D-14th-CA) Began service in 1993. SAF member John Muller from Daylight Nursery, in Half Moon Bay, Calif., feels she is going to be a long-term member of Congress and has established a good relationship with her office. Congresswoman Eshoo is a member of the New Democrat Coalition. Rep. Sam Farr, (D-17th-CA) Began service in 1993. Committee Assignments: Appropriations-Agriculture Subcommittee Position on SAF Issues: Supportive of the domestic flower industry. PromoFlor cosponsor. Jeff Fortenberry (R-1-NE) Committee Assignments: Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, Small Business Position on SAF Issues: Sits on House Agriculture-Specialty Crops Subcommittee, Foreign Affairs, Small Business committees. Voted for House version of the Farm Bill, including specialty crops provisions. Previous SAF Contributions $1,000-2007 Miscellaneous Information Close relationship with Mel and Joey Schwanke. Rep. Virginia Foxx, (R-5th-NC) Began Service in 2005. Committee Assignments: Agriculture; Education and Labor; Oversight and Government Reform Position on SAF Issues: Foxx built a record in the state senate as a pro-business legislator. She voted against all state budgets that raised taxes, and has said she will fight to abolish the death tax and capital gains taxes. She voted for major medical malpractice reform in the state legislator. Voted with SAF on the AHP Bill. Previous SAF Contributions: $1,000-2004 & $1,000-2006 Miscellaneous Information: Foxx is a pro-business candidate who won the Republican nomination in the highly contested fifth congressional district. Rep. Richard Burr who is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards currently holds this open seat. Foxx owned and operated Grandfather Mountain Nursery for 28 years. . Foxx has 10 years of experience in the state Senate and has compiled a conservative voting record. Rep. Trent Franks, (R-2nd-AZ) Began service in 2003. Committee Assignments: Armed Services; Judiciary Position on SAF Issues: Conservative Member of Congress with a small business background. He is expected to support SAF on most small business issues. Voted with SAF on the AHP Bill. Rep. Elton Gallegly, (R-24th-CA) Began service in 1987. Committee Assignments: Foreign Affairs; Judiciary; Natural Resources; Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Position on SAF Issues: Gallegly is a conservative Republican and can be counted upon to support SAF on most issues. Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) Began service in 2006 Committee Assignments: Agriculture, Armed Services Position on SAF Issues: Is a member of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Horticulture, which is key for our Farm Bill efforts. Previous SAF Contributions: $1,000-2008 Miscellaneous Information: Mark Adams, a floriculture grower in her district, is on her farm advisory committee and stays in touch with SAF regarding key issues. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, (R-6th-VA) Began Service in 1993. Committee Assignments: Agriculture (Ranking Minority Member);Judiciary Position on SAF Issues: Ranking Member Goodlatte's district is a heavily agriculture district, and most of its voters are on the conservative side of the Republican spectrum. Goodlatte matches his constituents' views. Voted with SAF on the AHP Bill.
